ELA 6 | Blackout Poetry

Sixth graders enjoyed the creative license they received with a blackout poetry assignment.

Focusing on one of the literary concepts we explored in Hatchet (foreshadowing, imagery, conflict, characterization), students created poems using anchor words from the text. They then reread the page in its entirety to find resonant words and pieced them together to make words of a poem. Their art was then generated around the selected words.

“It is my opinion that a story worth reading only in childhood is not worth reading even then.”

Maddox C.
  • "One thing I appreciate about Mrs. Taylor is that she makes learning fun. Usually, English bores me and it used to be one of my least favorite subjects. But ever since I've been learning with Mrs. Taylor, my enjoyment of the subject has gradually increased and she has ended up as my favorite teacher."

Sophia B.

  • "One thing I really love about Mrs. Taylor is her amazing personality. She always finds the positive in everything. I'm glad to have her as a teacher in middle school!"
